What am I Worth?

Last week I had my world rocked when my coworker’s perception of me was brought to light. I was surprisingly wrecked when I realized it. And just like that my perception and view of myself hit the fan. Immediately when I found out my thoughts began to spiral. In a mere thirty seconds, I began to question everything. Does everyone I work with think this way? Has no one noticed the commitment I have given this job? Does no one realize how hard I have been working? What do others think? Is what I am doing even making a difference? Should I quit?

Look I recognize the quick 180 my thoughts made. And while I recognize the level of drama this was it was my reality for a minute. Recognizing the impact this other person’s words had on my self-worth, provoked a lot of deeper thoughts for me.

What does self-worth really mean? How do we genuinely measure worth?

By the world’s standards worth is based on what we do, our capabilities, and our personal views of ourselves. It is based on our performances and what other people’s perception of us is.

But thankfully according to God, our worth is measured much differently. According to Christ, our value is not based on what others think or based on anything that we have done or will do.

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

1peter 2:9

“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”  Romans 5:8

“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

John 15:13 NLT

Our worth is not based on what others think of us but on what God has done for us. We are God’s children, royal, and crowned children of the king. We can understand our worth when we understand who Jesus says we are and the sacrifices he has made for us. The maker of the universe made you intentionally and calls you wonderfully made, and has sacrificed everything to be in a relationship with you. When we understand what God says of us and what he has done for us we begin to grasp how valuable we are to God, and thus ourselves.
